Cool Island – Clairevoie

A compact “cool island” that fits into even the most constrained spaces! Addressing the challenges of thermal comfort and urban cooling, the Clairevoie plant-based structure combines greenery, shade, and seating in a vegetated pergola designed to integrate seamlessly into public spaces.

Inspired by mashrabiya screens, it meets the need for effective, adaptable shading. Its open-work vertical louvers filter lateral sunlight, create interplay between light and shadow, and promote the circulation of air cooled by plant evapotranspiration.

The vegetation benefits from a nearly 45 cm deep soil layer and takes root in the ground below after the surface layer is removed.

The structure combines wooden seating, climbing plants guided by supports, ground cover, and a natural larch canopy. The louvers provide immediate shade, even before the vegetation has fully matured. Over time, their combination with the plants creates a continuous canopy, offering a sustainable solution that supports the gradual greening of cities.
